Aronia prunifolia (purple chokeberry)
Soil type: clay, loam, sand
Sun exposure: Full sun , partial sun
Mature height: 8’ - 12’
Benefits: birds, pollinators, edible fruit for humans and wildlife
Description: This four season shrub begins its show in spring with white ‘spirea like’ clusters of flowers which transition into purple edible berries in the summer. With fall, this shrub puts on a show of bright red foliage and is a perfect native alternative to invasive burning bush. Any remaining berries through winter are a welcome snack to returning birds in early spring. This shrub is adaptable to a variety of soil types and makes a fantastic privacy hedge. Self fertile but two specimens will create larger fruit. A natural hybrid between black and red chokeberry.
