Red Oak (Quercus rubra)
size

Soil type: clay, loam, sand

Sun exposure: Full sun, partial sun, shade

Mature height: 60’ - 75’

Benefits: shade tree, host plant, birds

Description: The fastest growing of the oak species, the red oak is tolerant of salt and pollutants and is a great choice for larger tree lawns. This species is also more tolerant of shade than other oaks. Because of its deep taproot, these trees do not break up pavement and sidewalks like shallow rooted trees. Like all oaks, this keystone species supports up to 600 types of caterpillars and in turn sustains the bird populations.
